At Uccello Lane the aim was always to grow as much produce as we could with a Kitchen garden, a veggie patch, fruit trees and of course the chooks! I first saw a Kitchen garden with a willow fence at Stonefields – however was held back a bit by the area outside the kitchen was quite dark but eventually we were able to remove the 20 metre high magnolias to make way for the herbs, celery, fennel – and a “flower wall” with some Mary-lou Pittard tiles of course!
The veggie patch is outside where the chooks are – here we grow hollyhocks, silverbeet, rhubarb tomatoes, sage and various other things – it is a high turnover area – currently overshadowed by huge artichokes. The fruit trees are in the orchard close by where the olives are. After we lost our last flock to a fox – we decided to rebuild from the bottom up – and did everything that we read to make the new hen house fox proof. This took a year but finally we were ready to restock with 11 new ones – and the egg production is back on again
