October 2024 has produced the most magical spring – with warm days, light breezes and rain. Of course there is still four seasons possibly in any day mingled with an occasional over 25 degrees but mainly it has been gardening weather.

We have finished the fernery with water misters and hanging plants – it is hidden until you walk around the back of the secret garden. We got a huge Staghorn Fern (Elk fern) and divided it into many pieces which are all thriving despite some hot weather.

The birds seem to be very active with lots of baby birds waiting to be fed. The most persistence are the kookaburras and their parents seem to work from morning til night to keep them fed. The Kookas are also expanding the opening in the tree. This is where they feed the babies. Also the lorikeets are trying to claim the hollow log – there are constant razzing each other and of course the myna birds never stop. The doves insist on doing some sort of mating dance outside our window with the “whooo whooo” sound going on for hours.

The focus of planting continues to be natives while we wait for spring to really take over – daffodils have already faded but the hellebores are still flowering with the iris yet to come!
