The Gang Gang cockatoo are not often seen and keep to themselves. They are not hard to miss as the male has a distinctive scarlet red head and crest, with the rest of the body slate-grey. The female has a dark grey head and crest, with the feathers of the underparts edged pink and yellow.
We don’t have many photos of them at Uccello Lane – but during March on the very hot days we kept many large bowl of water filled up every day and we were rewarded by the Gang Gangs and the Musk Lorikeets coming to visit.
As keen bird lovers having a sighting of a pair of Gang Gang Cockatoo having a drink over a very hot period in the summer was so exciting – they are in the endangered category – which means it is at high risk of extinction with a large decline in its numbers due to the climate crisis and the bushfire disasters. Gang Gangs are smallish birds with the male having distinctive scarlet red head and crest, with the rest of the body slate-grey. The female has a dark grey head and crest, with the feathers of the underparts edged pink and yellow. So try to imagine how we felt when 10 plus Gang Gangs arrived on a front deck for a drink and a chat – yes we captured this on video but almost lost our mind with excitement.
